Learn STEM or Risk Getting Left Behind by AI – DeepMind CEO’s Advice to Students

By Mohit Singhania | Updated: 25 June 2025

In an era where AI is transforming the job landscape, one message stands out: Upgrade your skills, or risk becoming obsolete.
That’s exactly what Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, emphasized recently while addressing the future of jobs in an AI-dominated world.

According to Hassabis, the best way to stay relevant and valuable is to focus on STEM education — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

“AI will create new, very valuable jobs,” he said. “But only for those who understand how the technology works.”

STEM is More Than a Degree — It’s Your Future Toolkit

STEM stands for:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics

These subjects are now the foundation for AI, robotics, data science, space tech, and even creative design. Hassabis insists that students who focus on these fields will be the ones leading, not fearing, the future.

“It’s not just about memorizing formulas. It’s about understanding systems, logic, and tools — the stuff AI itself runs on.”

Why This Advice Matters for Indian Students

India has millions of STEM graduates. But the problem is clear — degrees without skills.

Hassabis made it clear that theoretical knowledge alone is not enough anymore.
Students must combine what they study with hands-on experience, like:

  • Building AI tools with ChatGPT, Gemini, or Firefly
  • Participating in coding contests or hackathons
  • Publishing simple projects on GitHub
  • Learning how to use AI as a productivity partner

Anthropic CEO’s Warning Paints the Other Side

While Hassabis remains optimistic, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, warns of massive disruptions.
In May 2025, he stated that AI could wipe out 50% of white-collar, entry-level jobs in just 5 years.

“We must be honest. This technology is powerful. If we don’t prepare now, people will be left behind.”

This stark contrast makes it even more important for Indian students to act now.

How You Can Start Preparing Today

Whether you’re a student, a job-seeker, or a working professional, here’s your action plan:

  • Learn Python, basic machine learning, or data science from platforms like Khan Academy, NPTEL, or MIT OpenCourseWare
  • Experiment with ChatGPT, Canva AI, Firefly, or Google Gemini
  • Build mini projects: AI chatbots, recommendation engines, smart calculators
  • Create a strong LinkedIn profile and share what you’re learning
  • Get into open-source contributions or AI internships, even unpaid for a short while

InsightReal Talk Verdict
“AI will take every job”❌ Not true — but it will take jobs from those who don’t upskill
“STEM is difficult”✅ Yes, but it’s more rewarding than ever
“Just getting a degree is enough”❌ Absolutely not — practical skills matter more now
“Only tech people are safe”❌ STEM + creativity = unbeatable combination

Final Thought

The future is already here. It’s just not evenly distributed — yet.

What you study and build today will decide whether you’re building AI tomorrow, or just adjusting to it.
Demis Hassabis believes the opportunities are massive. But only for those who take the call seriously.

Focus on STEM. Embrace real-world tools.
Because in the age of AI, knowing how to think technically is the real superpower.
